Custom Label Glossary
Dies: Tooling Used to cut specific sizes in label material master rolls
Direct Thermal: Used Heat to burn image into label. Heat sensitive and meant for short term applications
Face Slit: Cut in the label by the die that can turn a single label into multiple pieces
Flood Coat: Describes a label that is all one color, other than blank (white).
Liner Slit: Cut in the release liner (wax backing of labels) created by the die
Piggy Back: Double Material that allows a piece of the label to be removed and applied to another object at a later time
Plates: Tooling used to create static print on pre-printed labels (logos, text, graphics)
Release Liner: Wax backing of labels used to allow adhesive to release
Sensing Method: Printer method of sensing labels and tags (notches, hang holes, gap sensing, black marks)
Symbology: Type of Barcode that needs to be produced (1D: 128, 3 of 9) (2D: PDF 417, Datamatrix, QR)
Thermal Transfer: Uses a ribbon to transfer ink from ribbon to label or tag. More durable than Direct Thermal

Pre-Printed Asset Labels and Tags
If you do not need to print your own custom asset lables, System ID offers pre-printed labels. These labels are sold in serial number groups to suit your level of growth, and arr offered in a variety of sizes and styles.
Asset Label Materials

Polyester "Void" Barcode Labels
Polyester is one of the most durable barcode label materials available today. Add to this label a specific adhesive that leaves behind a word ("void") or a pattern (checkerboard) when removed from the asset or product, and you have a fool-proof way to determine if your most valuable assets and products have been tampered with. In addition to the marks left behind, the tamper evident label itself will show the same pattern so that it cannot be applied to another product or asset. These tamper evident labels with barcode are typically used for warranties on electronic equipment, retail price labels and in any asset tracking application.

Vinyl is not as durable as polyester but will hold up to minor abrasion and is more durable than paper. The key with these tamper evident labels is that they cannot be removed intact. The adhesive and material act in combination to secure the label to the asset or product. Should someone try to remove the label it literally self-destructs.

Metal barcode tamper evident labels is a very broad term encompassing many different types of labels for extreme abrasion or temperature applications. All "metal" labels must be pre-printed as the print is actually underneath the surface of the label. There are anodized aluminum tamper evident labels with barcodes with adhesive (most common) or you can get bolt on metal labels for barcodes that must stay in place for the life of the product or asset. Applications using bolt on metal tags would be, but are not limited to heavy equipment (bull dozers, cranes, etc.), lawn care maintenance, industrial or commercial HVAC equipment and the list goes on. These tags come in aluminum, stainless steel and Teflon coated.

Barcode labels have several important attributes: the print method, the label media used to print on, the adhesive used to attach the label, and the size needed. Careful choices that fit your needs will help lower ownership cost and ensure the label performs under the conditions it will face.
Labels or Tags?
Labels are backed with an adhesive, and attached directly to an object. Tags do not have an adhesive backing, but may have a hole to attach them via an alternate method.Print Method
Thermal Transfer Printing
Thermal transfer uses a barcode printer ribbon to form an image, using heat to transfer ink from the ribbon to the media. Thermal transfer printers can use a wide variety of media materials and ribbon formulations. Images have a greater durability for long-term applications.
Direct Thermal Printing
Direct thermal barcode labels are specially coated to run through a barcode printer without a ribbon. The special coating reacts with the heat from the barcode print head to burn the image onto the label. Because of the specialty coating, direct thermal barcode labels are sensitive to heat and other environmental conditions. The images will deteriorate over time, and are more suited for short-term applications, such as shopping, clinical laboratory tracking, and perishable food labels.
Direct thermal barcode labels are typically slightly more expensive than thermal transfer barcode labels at purchase but have a lower cost of ownership because you are not required to purchase a ribbon for printing.
Label Media
Paper
Paper thermal transfer barcode labels are usually best for bin labeling, shipping and product labeling. Most direct thermal labels are paper and because of this they are environmentally sensitive and have limited and specific applications.
Synthetic
If your application requires a label to withstand abrasion, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, weather resistance or must meet UL or CSA compliance standards, it is vital that you use a synthetic label. The materials in synthetic labels are designed to withstand the rigors of these special environmental conditions.
Adhesive
Adhesive choice will vary with the desired durability of the label. Applications may call for temporary, no-residue adhesive, or semi-permanent adhesion.
Size
Label size is often a major factor in choosing stock or custom labels. Stock labels come in the most common sizes, but your application may require a specific dimensional "footprint." In this case, custom labels can be made to fit any need.
