Electronic Product Code (EPC) Standards

EPC stands for Electronic Product Code. This code will be the identification standard for products entering the Supply Chain. EPC encoding and Gen 2 RFID coding are the next generation of Universal Product Code (UPC) system. A 96-bit code that has digits to identify the manufacturer, product category and the individual item. Manufacturers obtain registration numbers & assign them to products. Each number is unique to a given item.

EPC Encoding Class Type

• 0 = read only
• 0+ = read-write
• 1 = Write Once/Read Many (WORM)
• 2 = Read/Write
• 3 = Read/Write battery enhanced for long range
• 4 = Read/Write active transmitter
