What Type is Right for my Application?

Linear imagers (also known as CCD barcode scanners) have advanced significantly over the years in both extended reading distance and aggressiveness of the scan engine. The reading distances of linear imagers range from a few inches to several feet. Linear imagers are rugged because they have no moving parts and are ideal for a variety of applications including retail, shipping, receiving, and inventory.

Laser barcode scanners use laser diode technology with oscillating mirrors to read barcodes. The brightness and sharpness of the laser offers greater preciseness and visibility when targeting a barcode especially in bright light. Extended range laser barcode scanners can achieve distances of up to 35 feet when reading special reflective labels and are ideal in forklift applications where greater read distances are required.

2D barcode scanners/Area Imagers are the newest generation of barcode scanners and are quickly gaining in popularity due to ability for omnidirectional reading both 2-dimensional and linear barcodes. In addition to scanning barcodes, many area imagers are capable of image capture such as signatures or damaged goods. 2D barcode scanners/Area Imagers are ideal for retail, shipping, receiving and inventory applications.

Wand barcode Scanners are inexpensive, efficient and require low power consumption to operate and are suited for low-volume applications. The wand barcode scanner requires contact with the barcode and may require the barcode to be swiped several times to read a barcode. Wand barcode scanners are ideal for desktop applications because they are less cumbersome than other barcode scanners.

Fixed mount barcode scanners are widely used in work-in-process applications and for high-speed sortation along conveyor systems. Smaller fixed mount barcode scanners are commonly used in laboratory and security identification environments. Unlike other barcode scanners, most fixed-mount barcode scanners are typically integrated with other equipment and automation systems.

Omnidirectional barcode scanners are ideal for checkout counters because the high-speed rastering scan pattern lets you quickly capture a barcode from a variety of angles. Omnidirectional barcode scanners options include in-counter mounting or on-counter mounting. Smaller omnidirectional barcode scanners offer the versatility of being used as a handheld or hands-free scanner.
