Depending on your application, there is a barcode reader for every job. Laser barcode scanners, such as the Symbol LS2208, are great for scanning barcodes from a distance greater than 12". Linear imager barcode scanners, like the Honeywell 3800g, are better for reading poorly printed or damaged barcode labels.
Want to future proof your business? 2D barcode scanners, like the Honeywell Xenon, are the way to go. 2D barcodes allow you to capture more data in one scan, such as serial numbers, production dates, lot number, and much more.
Maybe you need to be mobile while scanning. Try a cordless barcode scanner like the Symbol LS4278. It allows you a 33-foot working range thanks to cordless Bluetooth technology.
Call our certified barcode scanner experts today to get the ideal barcode scanning solution for your application. Every member of the System ID sales and tech team has certifications from the leading barcode scanner manufacturers to recommend the perfect barcode reader for you and keep it working at its best.

Barcode Scanners 101 |
A barcode scanner is simply a device that provides a quick and effective way to read barcodes and is a key component in most barcode systems. Barcode scanners are ideal for applications such as receiving, shipping, file tracking and inventory. For these applications, the standard corded or cordless scanners are suitable.
What Type is Right for my Application?
Linear Imager Barcode Scanners |
Linear imager barcode scanners(also known as CCD barcode scanners) have advanced significantly over the years in both extended reading distance and aggressiveness of the scan engine. The reading distances of linear imagers range from a few inches to several feet. Linear imagers are rugged because they have no moving parts and are ideal for a variety of applications including retail, shipping, receiving, and inventory.
Laser Barcode Scanners |
Laser barcode scanners use laser diode technology with oscillating mirrors to read barcodes. The brightness and sharpness of the laser offers greater preciseness and visibility when targeting a barcode especially in bright light. Extended range laser scanners can achieve distances of up to 35 feet when reading special reflective labels and are ideal in forklift applications where greater read distances are required.
2D Barcode Scanners |
2D barcode scanners/Area Imagers are the newest generation of barcode scanners and are quickly gaining in popularity due to ability for omnidirectional reading both 2-dimensional and linear barcodes. In addition to scanning barcodes, many area imagers are capable of image capture such as signatures or damaged goods.2D scanners are ideal for retail, shipping, receiving and inventory applications.
Wand Barcode Scanners |
Wand barcode Scanners are inexpensive, efficient and require low power consumption to operate and are suited for low-volume applications. The wand barcode scanner requires contact with the barcode and may require the barcode to be swiped several times to read a barcode. Wand scanners are ideal for desktop applications because they are less cumbersome than other barcode scanners.
Fixed Mount Barcode Scanners |
Fixed mount barcode scanners are widely used in work-in-process applications and for high-speed sortation along conveyor systems. Smaller fixed mount barcode scanners are commonly used in laboratory and security identification environments. Unlike other barcode scanners, most fixed-mount scanners are typically integrated with other equipment and automation systems.
Retail Barcode Scanners |
Retail barcode scanners are ideal for checkout counters because the high-speed rastering scan pattern lets you quickly capture a barcode from a variety of angles. Retail barcode scanners options include in-counter mounting or on-counter mounting. Smaller retail scanners offer the versatility of being used as a handheld or hands-free scanner.
