Barcode Scanner Basics
A barcode scanner is simply a device that provides a quick and effective way to read barcodes and is a key component in most barcode systems. Barcode scanners are ideal for applications such as receiving, shipping, file tracking and inventory. For these applications, the standard corded or cordless scanners are suitable.
Linear Imagers
Linear imagers (also known as CCD scanners) have advanced significantly over the years in both extended reading distance and aggressiveness of the scan engine. The reading distances of linear imagers range from a few inches to several feet. Linear imagers are rugged because they have no moving parts and are ideal for a variety of applications including retail, shipping, receiving, and inventory. View Datalogic Linear Imagers
Laser Scanners
Laser scanners use laser diode technology with oscillating mirrors to read barcodes. The brightness and sharpness of the laser offers greater preciseness and visibility when targeting a barcode especially in bright light. Extended range laser scanners can achieve distances of up to 35 feet when reading special reflective labels and are ideal in forklift applications where greater read distances are required.View Datalogic Laser Scanners
2D Scanners/Area Imagers
2D scanners/Area Imagers are the newest generation of barcode readers and are quickly gaining in popularity due to ability for omnidirectional reading both 2-dimensional and linear barcodes. In addition to scanning barcodes, many area imagers are capable of image capture such as signatures or damaged goods. 2D scanners/Area Imagers are ideal for retail, shipping, receiving and inventory applications. Wands
Wands are inexpensive, efficient and require low power consumption to operate and are suited for low-volume applications. The wand requires contact with the barcode and may require the barcode to be swiped several times to read a barcode. Wands are ideal for desktop applications because they are less cumbersome than other barcode scanners. View Wand Scanners
Fixed Mount Scanners
Fixed mount scanners are widely used in work-in-process applications and for high-speed sortation along conveyor systems. Smaller fixed mount scanners are commonly used in laboratory and security identification environments. Unlike other barcode scanners, most fixed-mount scanners are typically integrated with other equipment and automation systems. View Datalogic Fixed Mount Scanners
Omnidirectional Scanners
Omnidirectional scanners are ideal for checkout counters because the hight-speed rastering scan pattern lets you quickly capture a barcode from a variety of angles. Omnidirectional scanners options include in-counter mounting or on-counter mounting. Smaller omnidirectional scanners offer the versatility of being used as a handheld or hands-free scanner.
