While that is true, barcode scanners are capable of so much more with a little programming. Your scanner can be programmed to do anything your keyboard can do. Whether it is add an Enter function after every scan, or adding a function in between the serial number and the location, it can be done.

You can do it yourself, but it is time consuming and a little frustrating to those without experience.

Basic Symbol Scanner Programming

Basic programming of a barcode scanner is done over the phone with a System ID product manager.

Basic Programming Includes:

• Adding a Suffix: Enter or Tab; this allows you to move to the next/down a cell after each scan
• Presentation Mode: The scanner is activated when it senses a barcode
• Automatic Trigger: The scanner is always on
• Reread Delay Speed: This sets the time period before the scanner can read the same barcode a second time; protect against accidental rereads
• Linking Scanner to Base (cordless scanners only)
• Setting Scanner to Manufacturer Defaults: Resets the scanner to standard product default settings
• Selecting Barcode Symbologies: Set the scanner to read only the symbologies you want

Steps:

1. Order a Symbol barcode scanner from System ID.
2. After the scanner is delivered, call your sales rep. to schedule an appointment for the programming.
3. In the appointment, the product manager walks you through the basic programming steps. This usually takes between 5-10 minutes.

Advanced Symbol Scanner Programming

Advanced scanner programming needs to be done in-house by a System ID product manager.

Advance Programming Includes:

• Skip/Send Characters: Need only some of the information in the barcode to transmit? This is a must.
• Remove/Add Spaces
• Alt Keys
• ASCII Keys: Add functions, letters, or numbers to the beginning or end of your barcode
• Command Keys
• Special Keys
• Function Keys: Does your keyboard have "hot keys," your scanner can too
• Numeric Keys
• Extended Keys: Add a backspace, delete, or print to you barcode

Steps:

1. When ordering your Symbol scanner, tell your sales rep. what programming you need. The sales rep. will put your programming instructions on the order.
2. Once the product manager gets your scanner, he will call you to confirm the directions.
3. Advanced programming usually takes between 2-3 days to program. The programmed scanner is shipped to you, ready to scan.
