Star Micronics ID Card Printers
Like all other computer-based printers in the office, ID card printers are digital. Most photo ID cards are printed by digital thermal transfer, a process by which color is transferred from a single-use ribbon to various kinds of card materials. There are two distinctly different printing technologies for ID card printers: dye sublimation, using the three process colors yellow/magenta/cyan (YMC) for photo-realistic images, and mass transfer, using resin-coated film, for machine readable text and barcodes (usually in black). ID card printers are available as single-sided or dual-sided printers and could print at 203 or 300 dpi print resolution. Some have the option of encoding magstripe cards or smart cards.
