QR Codes to Save Money? There’s an App for That

The digital layer is ever-expanding. Apparently it’s now possible to use a smartphone app to scan funny-looking codes scattered around the real world, which can bring you to web pages, give you coupons, or do other wonderful Internet-y things.
DRI's free Wallet App uses QR codes that can be scanned using a smartphone camera.
A Dallas-based startup called DRI enables customers at local businesses, like restaurants, to scan a QR code in the establishment’s window to sign up for a loyalty program. When you scan the code, you’ll be taken to the restaurant’s website to join. QR codes can also be used to get coupons or to see the restaurant’s menu; a code could also send customers to a business’s website to purchase gift cards or to see a list of specials. DRI’s free Wallet App is like an electronic wallet that stores these coupons and loyalty rewards. The app also allows you to give coupons or gift cards as gifts to friends or family; someone could, for example, get a coupon from a QR code and then send it to their friend Betsy (a slightly senile, yet spunky, 92-year-old woman), who might have a real need for a buy-1-get-1-free coupon for Polaroid film. DRI does this, and more. Check out DRI here (or scan QR code at right).
