Will there be Droid Mobile Computers?

No doubt you’ve heard either in your office or personal life the word “Droid” being said in a robotic voice. The Android OS is here and is here to stay. It appears that Google is extremely interested in the mobile phone world, especially with news of their acquisition of Motorola a month ago.
With the acquisition of Motorola, use of Google's Android OS might become even more wide spread. Will it break into the rugged mobile computer space?
When attending manufacturer events and various partner events, one of the hot topics for discussion is the Android Operating System. Mobile computer manufacturers want to know if there is demand and interest in getting a rugged mobile computer that has Android OS. The feedback that is often given is, “yes, please get a device with Android on it.” That would be quite a transition from what we know in our industry, which has been dominated by Microsoft Windows for the last 10 years or so. People are excited about Android because of its open platform and the fact that it is made by Google. As we all know, who doesn’t just “Google it”? There are also some concerns with Android. Can it be done right to work in the enterprise? Is it secure enough? Can you lock it down? Does this mean devices will have Windows and Android? Whatever the case might be, I fully anticipate seeing at least one of the leading manufacturers of rugged mobile computers have a device with Android on it sometime next year. I’m excited since I have been using an Android phone for the last 9 months and so far I’ve been extremely pleased with it. Would you want a device with Android on it? Stay tuned. As we hear more, we will let you know.
